Kanpur Cyber Police Raid: Local Digital Arrest Cell Busted in Bhaumeshwar

Background and Timeline: The Kanpur Cyber Crime Team, West Zone, and Sachendi Police Station executed a joint operation on Monday, January 26, 2026, to dismantle a localized fraud cell . The investigation revealed that cybercriminals were operating from multiple residential houses in the Bhaumeshwar area. The strike was initiated after technical information was aggregated from the Cyber Cell’s internal reporting portal following several localized complaints.

Modus Operandi: The accused specialized in running “digital arrest” operations, where they impersonated police department officials or senior crime branch officers. They contacted victims with false allegations of serious crimes, such as viewing prohibited content, and threatened strict legal action unless “settlement” payments were made. In some instances, they also lured victims with fake government welfare schemes to obtain their banking credentials and initial deposits.

Victims and Financial Impact: While the specific total of siphoned funds is still being tallied, police recovered 17 mobile SIM cards and 5 ATM cards from different banks, indicating a high-volume operational capacity. The syndicate targeted vulnerable individuals in and around the Sachendi region, using psychological intimidation to ensure rapid transfers. The recovery of three forged Aadhaar cards suggests the gang was creating fake identities to open numerous mule accounts.

Investigation and Agencies Involved: DCP West SM Qasim Abidi led the joint team from the Sachendi Police Station and the West Zone Cyber Cell. Technical experts utilized mobile surveillance and IP mapping to locate the specific houses in Bhaumeshwar being used as makeshift call centers. The investigation is now looking for links between this Kanpur-based cell and larger interstate syndicates providing the forged documentation.

Arrests and Suspects: Three suspects were arrested and identified as Arvind Singh (26), Anurag Singh (23), and Vikas Singh (24). They have been booked under FIR No. 33/2026 for criminal conspiracy, cheating by personation, and forgery under the BNS and IT Act. Police seized two Android smartphones and one keypad phone used to carry out the threatening calls and manage the transfers.

Broader Implications and Trends: This bust highlights the “fragmented” nature of modern cybercrime, where small cells in tier-2 cities manage the direct extortion phase while the financial back-end remains centralized . It underscores that “digital arrest” scripts have become standardized enough for local gangs to execute them with minimal technical training. Authorities have encouraged residents to report any suspicious activity from residential properties that may be housing illegal call centers.
